Connecting to your instance

  1. Run Paperclip on your computer. It listens on port 3100 by default.
  2. Install Tailscale on that computer and on your phone, sign both into the same tailnet, and turn the VPN on on the phone.
  3. On the computer, serve Paperclip over HTTPS on your tailnet:
    tailscale serve --bg --https=8443 http://127.0.0.1:3100
  4. Add the computer's tailnet hostname (e.g. my-mac.tail1234.ts.net) to Paperclip's allowed hostnames, then restart Paperclip:
    npx paperclipai allowed-hostname my-mac.tail1234.ts.net
  5. In the app, enter the address, e.g. https://my-mac.tail1234.ts.net:8443. Leave the key empty for a local_trusted instance; otherwise paste an API key.

The tailnet is the gate. A local_trusted instance authenticates nothing, so anyone who can reach it can approve spending or cancel work. Keep your tailnet to your own devices.

Common problems

“Cannot reach the instance” — check that Tailscale is on on the phone, that the computer is awake, and that Paperclip is running.

Host not allowed — the hostname was not added to Paperclip's allowed hostnames, or Paperclip was not restarted afterwards.
